How To Make Data Journalism Work For Not-So-Smart Phones, Low Bandwidths, Local Languages

As more and more users across Asia and Africa hook onto the Internet thanks to cheap smartphones and low-cost, low-bandwidth connectivity, newsrooms are reviewing and even recalibrating their approach to interactive journalism. The growth in local language users means the audience is fragmented further and publishers, especially the big ones, are reconsidering the feasibility of complex data projects both in terms of technology and the ability of the users to grasp such stories.
The panel will discuss the future of data-heavy, interactive projects in such unique emerging markets, drawing on personal and industry experience from projects that have done well and those that haven’t. Some key questions: Why are static visualisations in vogue again? How much data is too much? How to adjust data visualisation for audiences with varying literacy levels?
